Electrocardioversion is a safe, effective, method used to make a heart beat normally by using electric shock. The shock is most often used when a heart stops. However, it can be used to convert an abnormal or dangerous heart rhythm to normal.

A single, rapid, high voltage electric shock to the heart causes all the heart muscles to stop beating for a moment. This allows the normal rhythm mechanism to restart. The heart resumes beating normally. To be successful the shock must be delivered at just the right time during the heartbeat.

Cardioversion is usually accomplished with the first shock but occasionally more shocks are needed. Most people are unconscious from the premedication given before the cardioversion and don't remember the shock. Several hours after the procedure, you may return home. It can be performed safely as an outpatient procedure.
