An echocardiogram is an ultrasound
of the heart. Using sound waves, we are able to see the chambers
of the heart, the walls of the heart, as well as the heart
valves. We are able to evaluate any leakage or blockage in
the heart valves and determine the severity of the problem.
We can also see the heart contracting and evaluate the force
with which it contracts and therefore are able to identify
any areas of the heart which are not contracting normally.
You will be asked to undress from the waist
up and put on a cape. The technician will use a transducer
with a gel to help conduct the sound waves. This will be rubbed
on your chest. It is not painful but can be slightly uncomfortable.
